CMS Announces Increase in 2003 Anesthesia Payment Levels, effective March1

February 28, 2003 - This week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced an increase in the anesthesia conversion factor, effective March 1, 2003. The national average Medicare anesthesia conversion factor (CF) will be $17.05, which represents a 2.7% increase over the 2002 levels currently in effect (the national average CF for all other services will be $36.77, representing a 1.6% increase).

The following table shows adjusted 2003 anesthesia CFs by select geographic payment areas, compared with 2002 payment levels:

Location 2003 CF 2002 CF
Detroit, MI $19.86 $19.35
Other areas, MI $17.57 $17.10
Ohio $16.71 $16.26
National Average CF $17.05 $16.60

According to the ASA, CMS believes that most of its carriers will be in a position to immediately process claims for services on or after March 1 at the new rates, although some may require limited additional time to begin processing these claims.
