Aetna to Deny Use of Propofol in Colonoscopies January 3, 2008 – Despite its increased use in Colonoscopy screening, Aetna, one of the nations largest private health plan managers, has classified Propofol (Diprivan) as "medically unnecessary." Last year, WellPoint and Humana likewise ruled the drug out for coverage in all but high-risk cases. According to a report in the New York Times, many doctors favor the drug because it can make procedures move more quickly and make patients more relaxed, which can lead to a more thorough exam. Most doctors put administration of the drug in the hands of an anesthesiologist, which may increase the cost of the procedure $300 to $1,000. Aetna projects the exceptions would affect 10% to 20% of colonoscopy screenings. For the complete New York Times article, click here.
